A familiar face in the SIC takes over as the new head coach at Caldwell with much anticipation over what he can do with the program.

Steve Fleshman previously served 12 years as an assistant at Skyview, helping build and maintain that program as one of the premier ones in the area.

After a 1-8 mark on the field a year ago, the task that Fleshman takes over in his new job will be a tall one, however one that he is excited for.

“I am most excited about the unknown. So many changes to Caldwell football this season [including] coaches, players and culture. We will be overlooked,” said Fleshman.

Of the returners, Matias Pizano and Craig Adams are the most recognizable names, with each senior ready to lead as defensive backs on one side of the ball and skill position options on the other.

Joe Cameron and Anthony Toledo lead the way on the lines, which will be an important focus for the Cougars.

“Everything starts with the offensive line,” added Fleshman.

Defensively, Caldwell will run out of the 3-4 alignment, with the goal to limit big plays, be physical and to think less and play fast.

Junior linebacker Ezra Hernandez is one of the players who the new coaching staff expects to help lead the way in the middle of the defense and from the fullback position on offense.

Plenty of youthful talent will also have the opportunity to step into major roles this season.

“We have some good young talent that will have a chance to see some reps this fall,” said Fleshman.

The coach acknowledges that there has been a key area of emphasis this offseason.

“Details, details and details. The kids are seeing how the details matter on both sides. [We want to] play fast and be physical.”

Game one for Caldwell is on August 30 at home against Ridgevue.
