Team Preview

Written by: Sven Alskog

When you think of successful versions of basketball teams at Sho-Ban over the years they tend to come when the speed element is there. The Lady Chiefs appear ready to make their run at repeating history this year, with an influx of quick players who lead a revamped roster.

"We are much quicker and faster than last year," said Head Coach Andrew Baldwin.

With that team speed Baldwin plans to implement a version of controlled chaos on the hardwood, running the floor whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Leading scorer Shayla Johnson has graduated and Sho-Ban will miss her close to 30 points per game, however the loss will force the unit to come together as a cohesive group to provide some offensive firepower.

"We need to have more contributors on offense than last year," added Baldwin.

Defensively the Lady Chiefs have the ability to make things difficult for opponents.

"We have quickness on the perimeter and horsepower in the post," said Baldwin. "Overall, our team should be much improved over this past season."

Expect Sacoyah Appenay to lead the scoring punch, with post player Codie Hernandez an option on the interior that gives Sho-Ban an inside-outside threat.

Fellow posts KiRae Gonzalez, NiDea Martin and Sincere Martin are all back as well, so inside players return in bulk supply for Baldwin. He also has a surplus to choose from on the roster, with the 11 key newcomers he listed off.

Getting a balance of inside and outside scoring is critical for Sho-Ban. The team cannot get one dimensional or have one player handle all the scoring, as that has been somewhat of a restriction in the programs recent history.

Expect the Lady Chiefs to be more competitive in conference play this season, led by a good amount of quickness on both ends of the floor.
