Eagle was one of five teams out of Idaho’s 5A Southern Idaho Conference to make it to state last season, the most out of any conference.

The Mustangs survived a brutal District 3 tournament where they were the fourth out of five teams in a 12-team conference to advance to the state tournament, beating Borah after losing to Centennial in the District’s semifinals.

The Mustangs went on to beat Hillcrest 69-68 in an overtime survive-and-advance fashion in the opening round of the state tournament. But Eagle then fell to eventual state champion Mountain View, a team that beat the Mustangs three times over the course of the 2015-16 season, 72-52.

Eagle won over 20 games last season, only losing five times. But four of those five losses came to the state champions and the state-runner-up, Centennial.

The fifth and final loss of Eagle’s season came to Boise, who finished third in the state tournament, leaving the Mustangs with a fourth place finish.

Eagle was the best non-elite or second-tier team in the SIC last season. They beat teams like Capital, Borah and Middleton but lost to the Conference’s juggernauts on a regular basis, where the games were always decided by double-digits.

This season, the Mustangs will look to make the jump into that elite category, as they search for the school’s first state title.

Fourth year head coach, Cody Pickett will have a lot to work with this season, as most of his players return off of the 21-win season.

The Mustangs return three-time leading scorer and All-State selection, Cassidy Tiegs, who will be joined by fellow senior and Second-Team All-Conference selection Abby Mangum in the backcourt.

Sophomores Meghan Boyd and Jaimee McKinnie will provide consistent bench support as roll players in the backcourt while junior Kate Murphy returns off of her Second Team All-Conference selection season in the post.

With the only crucial losses from last year’s team being Jenny Stevens, who was an All-Conference Honorable Mention, and three players returning off of All-Conference and All-State seasons, the Mustangs look as if they could make that next jump into the elite category.
