The Borah Lions came up one game short of being three-peat state champions last season, falling to Capital in the State Championship game 63-53.

This season the Lions will be without 5A player of the year/University of Utah guard, Isaiah Wright. Wright averaged 18 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 2.7 steals per game for the Lions last season, and is in the conversation of being one of the best 5A players Idaho has ever seen in the past two decades. Borah also lost shooting-guard Nick Reed to Olympic College last season.

Twenty-first year head Coach Cary Cada has always coached by the motto, “Play better than yesterday.” This season the Lions will need to live by that motto and look towards the future and focus on getting better every day in practice if they want to return to the state tournament.

The Lions lost nine seniors from last year’s team, but return four juniors (two of whom were starters), in starting forward Ryan Bergersen, starting guard Deandre Jones, forward Mark Jerome, and forward Jake Paulin. Bergersen provides great length for the Lions and has a knack for blocking shots, and Jones is a quick guard that can shoot, dribble, and pushes the pace on offense.

When I asked Coach Cada about his expectations for his team this upcoming season he said, “I believe that the key to our season will be how quickly our newcomers progress. With the four returning juniors we are a bit short on experience, and we won’t have a lot of depth. So, it will certainly help our cause with other players stepping up and wanting the ball.”

With his current team Coach Cada believes that they still have a good chance of qualifying for the state tournament.

“We need to practice better every day so we are at our best when February comes around and we are playing our best basketball during the conference tournament.”

GAMES TO WATCH: Rival games vs. Capital this season on January 6 @Capital and February 12 @ Borah. Borah will have some athletes again this season and will be one of the more dangerous teams in “pod A” of the Southern Idaho Conference
